Top 5 Fried Chicken Restaurants in Kansas City

When making a top-five list, the task at hand is to make hard cuts. Around Kansas City fried chicken is done many ways, and it is done well at more than five restaurants making this task a daunting one.

However, I’m never one to shy away from a challenge so below are the five best fried chicken spots in Kansas City —

Rye

The menu says it all “our famous fried chicken,” and it is famous for a reason. The true essence of traditional fried chicken; pick up a three piece, or get a whole bird to share. With a location on the Plaza and in Leawood, Rye has proven that they do fried chicken the right way. Served with homemade pickles and ham gravy, you can get a three piece, half a chicken, or a full bird pieced up and the smells alone are worth the visit.

Stroud’s

For 85 years Stroud’s has been pan frying chicken the same way, which is a strong indicator as to why it holds the top spot on this list. There are three locations across the metro now. The original, Oak Ridge Manor, is inside an expanded 1829 log cabin. Having been in Kansas City since 1933 their tag line, “home of the pan fried chicken” is evermore evident when eating a breast smothered in gravy.

Beer Kitchen

If you are in the mood for chicken and waffles you will be hard pressed to best the cornflake-crusted oven-fried chicken breast, maple-mustard marinade and cheddar-bacon-chive waffle found at Beer Kitchen. For a restaurant that doesn’t solely specialize in chicken to make the top five speaks to how exceptional the chicken and waffles here are. Entrenched in the midst of Westport, Beer Kitchen is an ideal brunch or early dinner spot; the chicken and waffles are offered all day.

The Peanut

Hands down the best wings in the Kansas City metro. With three locations in Kansas and one north of the river in Missouri there is something special about the chicken wings here. Unlike the other restaurants on this list The Peanut isn’t on here for traditional fried chicken, but the wings are so good I feel the list would be remiss without noting their flavor.

Gram and Dun

Asian Pig Wings or chicken and waffles, if you want some seriously good chicken Gram and Dun will not disappoint. There are two fine chicken options at Gram and Dun on the Plaza, I think most people know about the Asian Pig Wings, which are a true treat. However the real reason they make my list is their honey butter chicken and waffles, the chicken is crispy and packs just the right amount heat.
