Julep Cocktail Club isn’t hard to miss boasting a sign that many Westport goers are undoubtedly attracted to: Whiskey. Upon walking into this whiskey-centric cocktail club your eyes immediately shift to a bar that is larger than life.

Three gorgeous, geometric-patterned chandeliers hover overhead casting an elegance that gives Julep an appeal like no other watering hole in Kansas City.

Executive Chef Charles Barr recently debuted Julep’s new fall menu for 2017. If you haven’t met Chef Barr in person, I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list. Not only is he an absolute delight to be around but a culinary mastermind that reinvents classics in a familiar yet inventive manner.

Start your fall meal with a couple of appetizers, the house chips and popcorn.

The house chips are coated in a barbeque spice blend and pair perfectly with the house popcorn--made with white cheddar, Szechuan peppercorn and miso.

For your first course, order the Chicken Liver Torchon best paired with the Black Flower, a Julep Classic.

The Black Flower, a seasonal whiskey sour, features a house made vanilla fig syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, J.T.S. Brown Bourbon and Angostura Aromatic Bitters. 

The cocktail is shaken then garnished with luxardo cherries. 

Take a sip of your Black Flower before diving into the Chicken Liver Torchon. Torchon refers to the art of torting to a cylinder round which creates an impeccable presentation of Chef Barr’s chicken liver mousse.

Married with autumnal flavors from the ginger applesauce, pickled apple with fennel and garnish of anise flower, the end result is a subtle yet quintessential fall appetizer. Plain le vain bread from Kansas City’s own Sasha’s bakery, serve as the medium for enjoying this treat.

Move onto your second course with the City Chicken, once you’ve devoured this dish--which you will, order the Pork Tenderloin paired with The Ambassador.

The City Chicken is a play on a familial dish from Chef Barr’s childhood. To start, there is absolutely zero chicken: the nuggets are comprised of a veal and pork loin mixture. 

“Growing up, chicken was expensive and this was a fool-proof solution my Grandma created.” 

Honestly, Chef Barr’s faux chicken nuggets were some of the best I have ever eaten.

Get ready to share because that is what the Pork Tenderloin dish was intended for.

Served with house made cashew flatbread and a myriad of accoutrements, from a spicy peach preserve to a warm cabbage slaw, this is a build your own flatbread party.

End your meal with one final course, the Fig Cake.

“Super light-super fall. I call it my basic cake, because it’s my favorite. I love ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and those are my favorite spices to eat personally.”

Chef Barr folds in whip cream with a  house made ricotta that is then frozen for a day to create a ricotta ‘ice cream.’ It has the texture of ice cream, but is really light and dry pairing perfectly with the moist fig ginger cake. A fig no bake cookie is crumbled around it and it all rests on a bourbon fig caramel sauce.
